SATA Azores Airlines - New requirements for accepting dogs on flights to the USA

Dear Travel Agent,

We would like to inform you of new regulations regarding the acceptance of dogs, such as AVIH*, PETC, or service dogs, on flights to the USA, effective from August 1st, 2024.

From this date onwards, Azores Airlines will no longer accept bookings for dogs traveling as AVIH. However, bookings confirmed before this date will still be accepted.

Only service dogs will be accepted on flights from high-risk countries, and these must be on direct flights to JFK, following CDC guidelines.

The following conditions will be verified at check-in:

  • Physical health of the dog.
  • Age: Dogs must be at least 6 months old to travel to and from the USA.
  • Microchip: Dogs must have an electronic identification microchip detectable by a universal scanner.
  • Documentation: Required documentation includes a PET passport, veterinary certificate, service dog certification (if applicable), and a completed Animal Importation Form submitted to the CDC. Proof of the CDC Import Form Receipt must be provided, which confirms:
  • a) Validity for 6 months from issuance and for multiple entries unless the dog visits a high-risk country.
  • b) Each dog must have its own CDC Import Form Receipt.
  • c) The form can be issued no earlier than the day of travel.
